Outdoor Fireplaces: Which Type is Best for You?

iStock-576728180.jpgOne of the outdoor features that many homebuyers look for when searching for a home is a fireplace. There are so many benefits associated with outdoor fireplaces, including providing a relaxing ambiance, light and warmth when enjoying outdoor living spaces. Not only can outdoor fireplaces provide a wonderful gathering place, but they can augment your evening get-togethers on a chilly night.

You likely already have a good idea just how much you’d love to have an outdoor fireplace added to your home, but may not know which of the different types of outdoor fireplaces – wood burning or gas – would be best. Here are some advantages of each:

  • Wood: The fire in a wood fireplace is unique and lends a nice aroma to your outdoor living space depending on the type of wood burned. If you have access to inexpensive firewood, this can be a great choice. The downside is that it takes more effort to clean a wood fireplace and it requires quite a bit of masonry work to install.
  • Gas: The biggest advantage of gas fireplaces is that they provide quality radiant heat and a nice flame without the messiness and inconvenience of a wood fireplace. Another advantage is that there are plenty of different types and appearances, so you can easily choose one that matches your home’s outdoor décor. If you go with a gas fireplace with a high efficiency rating, it can be fairly economical as well.
